How Much Money Do Ecommerce Sellers Make in 2026?

Table of Contents

Some ecommerce sellers make a few hundred dollars per month. Others generate millions in annual revenue. The difference isn’t just luck.

After reviewing seller earnings data from Amazon, eBay, Etsy, Shopify, TikTok Shop, and Instagram, we found that platform choice, product category, geography, and seller longevity all have a major impact on income. This report brings together the latest available data to show what ecommerce sellers actually earn, how earnings compare across platforms, and what separates the highest earners from the average seller.

Table of Contents

Key Findings

  • The typical (median) seller on most platforms earns somewhere between $300 and $2,000 per month — far below the flashy “average” numbers you see in headlines.
  • Amazon has the highest ceiling: top sellers average just over $1 million/month, but the median Amazon seller makes only $1,250–$1,667/month.
  • eBay has the lowest platform fees (13.94%), so sellers there keep more of every dollar — even at lower revenue.
  • Etsy’s median seller makes about $574/month, but its top “super sellers” average $174,410/month, mostly in jewelry.
  • Shopify’s median store makes $500–$2,000/month, while the top 1% of stores generate roughly half of all platform sales.
  • Instagram and TikTok Shop sellers in the US earn about 3x the global average, thanks to higher buyer spending and categories like beauty.
  • Across every platform, category choice (health/supplements, jewelry, collectibles, beauty) has a bigger impact on revenue than the platform itself.

Which Ecommerce Sellers Make the Most Money?

When you look only at the top sellers on each major marketplace, a clear hierarchy appears:

PlatformAvg. Monthly Revenue (Top Sellers)Avg. Yearly RevenueDominant Category
Amazon$1,002,348$12.03M+Health & Supplements (36.5%)
Etsy$174,488$2.09M+Jewelry (60%)
eBay$125,123$1.5M+Collectibles (47.2%)

A few patterns stand out:

  • Amazon rewards volume and repeat-purchase categories. Supplement sellers like Carlyle ($8.5M/month) and Bayland Health ($3.8M/month) dominate because customers reorder constantly.
  • Etsy rewards craftsmanship and pricing power. Jewelry sellers with average product prices of $1,000+ regularly hit $700K–$1.2M/month.
  • eBay rewards niche specialization. ParkerBrand earns $1.8M/month almost entirely from collectibles — cards, coins, and memorabilia.
  • Geography matters. 92% of top Amazon sellers, 90% of top eBay sellers, and 74% of top Etsy sellers are US-based — though Etsy has the most international representation, with top-10 sellers from Ukraine, Italy, Poland, and Canada.

Amazon Sellers: The Highest Revenue Potential

Amazon is a giant in e-commerce. The typical Amazon seller earns about $1,250 per month globally and about $1,667 per month in the U.S. But the average is much higher than the median because a small group of huge sellers pulls the numbers up.

Top Amazon sellers average about $1,002,348 per month in revenue. Carlyle reaches about $8.5 million per month. More than 60% of Amazon’s top 10,000 sellers have been active for over seven years, which tells you how much time and compounding matter.

Survival also drives earnings. Sellers who stick around long enough see a dramatic shift:

Year on Amazon% Still Active (US)Avg. Monthly RevenueAvg. Monthly Profit
Year 160% make a sale~$1,250~$188
Year 3~20%~$7,917~$1,188
Year 5+~7.8%~$29,167+~$4,375+

Amazon is strongest in health and supplements, which account for 36.5% of top seller revenue. That makes sense because repeat-buy products, strong demand, and solid pricing power can scale well on the platform. Amazon is the best example of high upside with high competition.

eBay Sellers: Lower Revenue, Stronger Margins

eBay is not as flashy as Amazon, but it can be a very good business model. The average eBay seller earns about $362.50 per month globally and $444.90 per month in the U.S. That is not giant money, but it is a real income stream for many sellers.

All sellers (verified avg)18,300,000100% ($79.6B)$362.50

The top 1% of eBay sellers average about $11,608 per month, and the top 5% average about $3,988 per month. The best sellers are often in collectibles, books, and specialty categories, where the right item can command a high price.

One of eBay’s biggest advantages is the fees. The platform takes 13.94% of each sale on average, which leaves sellers keeping a much larger share than they would on many other channels. eBay works best when the seller knows how to source well and sell niche inventory.

The quarterly trend data from eBay’s 2025 earnings tells an unusually clear story.

That U.S. revenue acceleration — from +1% to +19% in a single year — directly lifts seller earnings. More platform sales with the same number of sellers means more revenue per seller.

Etsy Sellers: Where Handmade Products Command Premium Prices

Etsy is where handmade, personalized, and design-led products shine. The average Etsy seller earns about $2,965 per month, while the median seller earns about $574 per month. That spread tells you that a smaller group of top shops pulls up the average.

Top Etsy sellers average about $174,488 per month in revenue, with monthly profit estimates of about $43.6K–$61K.

Jewelry is the standout category — it accounts for 60% of Etsy’s top earners, with average prices of $700–$1,200+ per item driving outsized monthly revenue. That is a big reason Etsy stands out: buyers here are willing to pay for style, customization, and story.

At the very top, AMJEWELRY NYC generates over $1.2 million per month — notable because the shop is only 4 years old. CaitlynMinimalist, one of Etsy’s best-known sellers, has logged over 3.7 million lifetime sales and an estimated $7.96 million per year

Shop age plays a big role, but not in a straight line. Sales tend to climb steadily for the first 3–7 years, peak, and then plateau as older shops lean on repeat customers and brand reputation rather than new listings.

Under 1 year~$1,878
3 years~$13,529
5 years~$24,020
10 years~$48,642

Etsy is not just for hobby sellers. It can become a real business when the product is unique, the listings are optimized, and the shop builds trust over time. Etsy is often the best platform for makers who want higher margins and a clearer brand story.

Shopify Stores: More Control, More Responsibility

Shopify is different because it is your own store. You own the brand, the customer list, and the website, but you also have to bring in your own traffic. That is why Shopify can be great for long-term business building, but harder for beginners who do not yet know how to drive sales.

The average active Shopify store makes about $12,178 per month globally and about $22,074 per month in the U.S. But the median store is much smaller, at about $500–$750 per month globally and $1,000–$2,000 per month in the U.S. That difference matters because it shows how much the biggest stores inflate the average.

Monthly Revenue% of Active Stores (Global)
Under $1,000~50%
$1,000 – $5,000~25%
$5,001 – $30,000~15%
$30,001 – $500,000~9%
$500,000+~1%

The average profit margin is about 10%, which means many Shopify stores keep only a small slice of revenue after ads, apps, fees, fulfillment, and product costs. Shopify can absolutely produce high income, but it usually rewards sellers who can build brand demand and keep ad spend under control. Shopify is best for sellers who want ownership and are ready to think like a real brand.

TikTok Shop Sellers: Fast Growth, High Volatility

TikTok Shop can move fast. The average active U.S. seller makes about $3,750 per month in sales, while the global average is about $346–$607 per month. That gap shows how much the U.S. market is still driving the biggest results.

The top sellers are massive. Micro Ingredients generated $63.4 million in annual sales, and the top three U.S. sellers all landed above $58 million in annual sales. At the same time, only 1,033 U.S. shops crossed $1 million in annual sales, which is fewer than 0.3% of registered U.S. shops.

TikTok Shop is heavily concentrated in beauty and personal care, which accounts for 79.3% of U.S. sales.

The platform also has a strong repeat buyer rate, which helps long-term sellers. TikTok Shop can create huge winners fast, but the best results usually come from content, creator networks, and strong product-market fit.

Instagram Sellers: Audience Size Drives Revenue

Instagram commerce sits between content and selling. The average active global seller makes about $713 per month, while the average active U.S. seller makes about $2,300 per month. That makes Instagram more approachable than some other platforms, but the income is still highly uneven.

U.S. Instagram micro-sellers with 1,000 to 10,000 followers typically make $500 to $3,000 per month in revenue. U.S. sellers with 10,000 to 100,000 followers can make $3,000 to $20,000 per month. Larger brands can scale much further.

What Drives Ecommerce Seller Income?

A few patterns show up again and again across the articles.

  • Category choice matters. Health and supplements dominate Amazon, collectibles dominate eBay, jewelry dominates Etsy, and beauty dominates TikTok Shop.
  • Geography. US-based sellers consistently out-earn the global average — sometimes by 2x to 3x — due to higher buyer spending and stronger logistics.
  • Traffic source matters. Marketplace sellers get built-in demand. Shopify sellers have to build demand themselves. TikTok and Instagram depend heavily on content reach.
  • Fees and ad spend can crush margins. Shopify, Amazon, and TikTok Shop all have meaningful cost structures that can cut revenue down fast.
  • Longevity helps. Older Amazon and Etsy sellers often outperform newer sellers because reviews, ranking history, and customer trust compound over time.
  • Content helps on social platforms. TikTok Shop and Instagram sellers who use video, tagging, and creator partnerships often do much better than sellers who do not.

Sellers on Which E-commerce Platform Make the Most Money?

It depends on what you’re optimizing for.

If you want…Best platform
The highest revenue ceilingAmazon (top sellers average $1M+/month)
The best margins for small sellerseBay (13.94% fees vs. Amazon’s 50%+)
Premium pricing on handmade/niche goodsEtsy (jewelry sellers hit $700K–$1.2M/month)
Full brand ownership and controlShopify (but expect a slower ramp-up)
Fast growth tied to content/audienceInstagram or TikTok Shop

No platform is “easy money.” Every single one of these studies shows the same pattern: a small percentage of sellers earn most of the revenue, while the typical seller earns a modest side income.

Understanding the Numbers: Revenue vs. Reality

These numbers are useful, but they are not a promise. Some figures are averages, some are medians, and some focus only on top sellers. That means you should not compare every number as if they came from the same yardstick.

The biggest mistake is reading a platform’s average and assuming that is what a normal new seller makes. It is not. Top sellers can pull averages up very hard, especially on Amazon, Shopify, TikTok Shop, and Etsy.

Final Thoughts

E-commerce sellers make very different amounts of money because they are not all playing the same game. Some platforms reward traffic. Some reward product quality. Some reward content. Some reward scale. The best income usually comes when the seller picks the right platform for the right product and keeps improving over time.
